Hi fellow riders and roadies.

We are close to our limit of 40 participants for this Great Ride Across Australia. This limit is mainly due to the accommodation available in some of the roadhouses across the Nullarbor section of the ride. From Burra in South Australia through to Sydney we will be in position to take more people.

The two things people mostly ask about is “how much is the ride” and “how much do we have to raise”.

  1. “how much is the ride” It is difficult to give you an exact price at this stage due to the ever rising price of fuel which obviously effects the price of food and accommodation. I never really planned to work out costings till about 12 months prior the ride, and that is still the case. At this stage I can only give you a “guestimate” and it will possibly be somewhere around $2000.00 to $2300.00 for the whole ride. That price covers all meals, accommodation and showers.
  2. “how much do we have to raise” We are all different people with all sorts of different talents and abilities. Our relationship with fundraising will be no different. Some of us will raise heaps on money and some of us will find it not quite as easy. What we do ask is that we all put our best effort in to fundraising and raise the maximum amount that we are able to. On previous long distance ultra marathon Bike For Bibles rides most people have excelled in their fundraising and have even surprised themselves as to the amount they raised. What usually spurs people on with fundraising is when they think of the outcome. We will be raising funds for a Bible Society Mission Project in India, details are at the end of this email.

Now “how much do we have to raise” Bike For Bibles current suggested minimum fundraising target is $200.00 per day of riding. For this ride that equates to = 30 days X $200.00 = $6000.00.

Note that this is a suggested minimum target, some of us will exceed that amount by heaps and others of us will have problems reaching that amount, all we ask is that you remember what the money is being used for and do your very best to raise the highest amount that you are able. The ride we are doing is far greater than what most people would only dream about, yet we have all set ourselves the target of riding our bikes well over 4000 kilometres, let us apply the same to our fundraising and we will undoubtedly achieve our targets.

Accommodation & showers on the ride.

Apart from the 1200 kilometre section across the Nullarbor, where we will be staying in roadhouses (motels), the rest of the ride we will be staying in a variety of halls, Church halls, Recreation centres, Showgrounds, Basketball stadiums. Across the Nullarbor, the arrangements will be Dinner, Bed and Breakfast with all linen etc, supplied. For the rest of the ride you will need your own sleeping bags and airbeds.

The daily schedule will be up and pack our gear away into the road support vehicles, have breakfast and the away onto our bikes. Morning Tea & Lunch and maybe Afternoon Tea will be on the road, Dinner could be provided by churches or community groups or alternatively we may eat out at a club or hotel. After dinner we will have a 30 minute praise, devotional or fellowship time (everyone uses different words) and then to bed to do it all again the next day.

We will send to you a few months prior to the ride full details about everything that you will need to know, and possibly more. In the meantime, please do not hesitate to send me an email with any questions that you would like to get answers for.

Registration Forms and Donation receipt books will be available available later this year, if you need them earlier, please let me know.

I don’t know about all of you guys, but I am really looking forward to this ride and to being able to ride with you all, it will be a FANTASTIC JOURNEY !

The project we will be riding to raise funds for is a partnership between Bible Society and REAP International. Basically Bible Society provides the funds and materials, and REAP administers the project in India. The following has been taken from a small leaflet about the project. These leaflets will be available to you.

“A new project promoting English language education in India through Bible reading is set to change many young children’s lives.

Undertaken in partnership with REAP International, the three-year project will focus on the poorest of the poor living in the slums and villages of Hyderabad and other parts of Andhra Pradesh. The living conditions children endure in these areas are a world away from those of most Aussie kids. Entire families may live in a single hut without sanitation facilities, clean water to drink or electricity.

Extreme poverty means not many children have the opportunity to go to school, and yet without basic education, few children can look forward to more lucrative employment and a better quality of life. Bible Society wants to break this cycle of poverty and lead many children to Jesus.

Teachers will use Scripture material to provide basic education over a 10 month period to approximately 600 children. Creative teaching methods including art, singing, dance and skits will make classes interesting and attractive. At the completion of their course, each child will receive a Bible as a gift and an incentive to continue with their education.

By November 2007, 1359 children had been reached in a pilot project that saw 33 centres operating in three districts of Andhra Pradesh. The children themselves testify to the project’s positive impact on their young lives.

10 year old Mounicka lives in Borabunda : “ I have been attending the literacy program for one month. My teacher is very nice and I enjoy the bible stories. I am from a Hindu family but I came to know Jesus after attending this program. I am also able to improve my English well.”

Sruthi, 8, lives in a slum area called Sainagar in Hyderabad : “ I am happy with the stories that I am learning in English. God is good to us that he gave us His Begotten Son for us. I came to know this and also some of the healings which Jesus did. I also started putting faith in Him for all situations I am facing. I am very grateful for the literacy program which enables me to learn English and know Jesus and His works for people who are in need. I thank the sponsors for their great effort,”

If you know of anyone else who is interested in coming on this ride, I will need to know very soon as we are getting close to having a “full house” Please ask them to email me with their address, phone and email details.

We are also in need of some Road Support and Food roadies for this ride, do you know of anyone ?

Don’t hesitate to email me if you have any questions.

It will be a Great ride.

With regards,

Jim Blaxland
