Ever wanted to join a Bike for Bibles Victoria ride but felt that you could never do it ?

The training rides are not too scary and are achievable. We always ride at an easy pace for ALL the cyclists. We normally do rides over increasing distances on four alternate Saturdays. The main aim is to get our bodies to adapt to more efficiently convert the food we have eaten and the energy stored in our fat cells into km on the bike. We also improve our muscle endurance.

Preliminary training dates are:

30th Jan

13th Feb

27th Feb

13th Mar

NEXT STEPS: Do some cycling in the next 6 weeks. Try riding 20 – 40 km. A good ride is from St
Kilda to Black Rock return, or do some rides on some of the many Bike Trails in Melbourne.

Send me an email to let me know you are interested swilson@biblevic.com.au.

Do something for
the Lord’s work and
have a great time
yourself as well.

Lindy Hou & Rosemary rode their green and gold tandem from Cairns to Melbourne in the recent Bike for Bibles ride (picture from Grahame Keast).

Here are some comments from a recent blog posting from Lindy ;

Bike for Bibles – Cairns to Melbourne Inland Ride

Rosemary and I rode a tandem bike, along with 12 other single bikes, from Cairns to Melbourne & covered a distance of 3,242 km. The ride took us exactly 4 weeks, with 4 rest days during this period. 4 vehicles, 10 road crews and many churches supported us along the way & during the month-long ride, the temperatures ranged from 1 to 44 degree C!!

The longest day was 207 km taking 7 hours 59 minutes on the saddle, while the biggest day for climbing was 2,086 meters, when we rode out of Cairns on the first day.

The total time spent on the saddle for the month was 124 hours and 30 minutes, with an overall average speed for the whole ride of 26.3 km/hr.

See her blog posting for more comments about her memorable moments on a Guided outer reef tour, Getting Lost in Roma and Behind the scenes in the Dubbo Zoo.

When I rode with Bike for Bibles from Perth to Hobart in 2003, we rode an average speed of 28.4km/h over the 4284 km. So I know how much effort it takes to make it that far that fast. Well done guys and girls !

This year, Ron Hooper who is blind will be taking up the challenge on the rear position on a tandem bike. He is very excited about the upcoming ride and is doing a great job raising awareness about the Bible Society’s work in Tanzania. (click on the image to read a PDF scan of the article).

We also have a veteran rider – Les Stewart – joining us. He is 82 years young and encouraging many of the younger riders to go the extra mile.
Departing at 6.45am from Port Melbourne the riders will do over 100kms on their first day riding through Williamstown, Docklands, Braybrook, Altona, Werribee, Lara, stopping in Geelong for lunch along the Eastern Beachfront and then riding on to Queenscliff where they will catch the Ferry across to Sorrento. From Sorrento they will ride along the Nepean Hwy to Dromana Presbyterian Church where they will be staying the night and participating in their Sunday morning service.
Sunday mid morning the riders continue their journey along the Port Phillip Bay coastline, completing their ride at approximately 5pm on Sunday 29th March at the Port Melbourne Cricket Ground

[via Gra Nomad] Fay and I are heading off on a Bike for Bibles ride (BFB) from Cairns to Melbourne. It’s a bit over 3,000 km (nearly 2,000 miles).

After having been on about 15 rides since 1994 I’ve decided to go as a roadie this time. That means I’ll drive behind a team and be ready to provide them with their daily needs such as water, pump, spare tube, sunscreen, fruit and lollies! Fay is going as a food roadie. That means she will be part of the team that organises the tucker – brekky, morning tea and lunch. Evening meals are usually looked after by local churches as we travel through the towns. Sometimes we go to an RSL or Leagues club for the evening meal.

There will be about 15 riders and 7 support crew. We even have a blind lady riding this trip (yes, she’s on the back of a tandem!)

The ride departs Cairns 5 April and arrives Melbourne 2 May.

For more info on this ride see 2009 Cairns to Melbourne and BFB NSW: The Cairns to Melbourne Inland Ride

BIKE FOR BIBLES 25th ANNIVERSARY

From 6 – 13 December I was a roadie for the 25th Anniversary ride of BIKE FOR BIBLES. Fancy that! 25 years ago Bob Forest, (see photo) his son and a friend rode from Sydney to Melbourne. They raised about $2,000 for the purchase of Bibles through the Bible Society. This ride expects to raise up to $60,000 to support Wontulp-Bi-Buyu indigenous college at Cairns in Northern Queensland. The rides over the past 25 years have raised in excess of ten million dollars for literacy development throughout the world. While there are rides in other countries (eg Canada and India) most rides have taken place in Australia.

“It was great to have Bob Forest (one of the original riders) have a cameo role by riding on day 1 and day 7. Bob is over 70. There was a tribute given to Bob and his wife Betty at the end of the ride.”
