The Bible Society in Australia was started in 1817. It is an interdenominational organisation devoted to putting the Bible into people's hands. Their official aim is to ;
`provide the Word of God to all people, in their own language, in a format they can use and at a price they can afford.'
The Bible Society is part of a large network of similar organisations, numbering 120 located in 200 countries.
Parts of the Bible have now been translated into over 2,300 languages. Complete Bibles are available in 900 languages.
